While much of my writing has been for academic publication and in UX research reports, I also enjoy writing for myself about things that interest me. It took me a bit of time after leaving academia to re-find the joy in writing that I’ve always had; my first foray back into writing for myself still has connections to professional life, though I’m expanding into creative writing as well.

I have written several articles on Medium.com about UX and my experience transitioning from academia to industry.

My blog on this site focuses a bit more generally on topics of professional and personal interests, including social support practices, creativity, current events, and anything else that feels noteworthy to me. My hope is that these writings will highlight the range of writing styles I can offer.

I’ve also helped people edit their manuscripts, articles, resumés, and more. Here is what they say about my work with them.

“If you’re like me and have trouble talking (much less bragging) about yourself, applications are a real challenge. I needed someone to help me formulate my application materials who wouldn’t try to minimize my accomplishments. Dr. Huisman helped me develop my C.V. to truly show the depth of work I’ve put in, and then helped me organize and highlight my cover letter to create a coherent and persuasive narrative. I would not have been as successful in my job hunt without her help!”
Book editing
I was terrified asking anyone to be an early reader for my novel, as I had poured my
heart out — and wasn’t sure if an audience would “get it.” With Dena, I knew my art and soul were safe. Her incredible feedback provided the outside insight I needed to better clarify main themes, and thanks to her expert editing, I feel more confident revising the organizational flow to fully support a reader’s potential to connect
with my intentions. I am more excited than ever to share my stories with the world.
